Numbers adopted from China
According to this state department web page, there were 7,906 immigrant visas issued for babies from China in 2005.
I've always heard that American's adopt from 80 to 90 percent of the babies out of China. That would mean that last year the total number worldwide would have been from 8800 to 9900.
That would mean that on average a month last year would have had from 730 to 825 dossiers.
As far as I know, the State Department doesn't give out quarter year or half year figures. It would be nice if they would.

Like I said, "approximately 8,000."

Y'know, I'm always skeptical of things picked up in APC-land. Like, for example, "90 percent of Chinese adoptions are by Americans," as you "heard," or "50 percent of Chinese adoptions are by Americans," as I "heard." So I did some looking. This takes patience, as there aren't a lot of articles out there on this subject, but I did find one from the People's Daily, which says 90% of Chinese children adopted by foreigners were adopted by Americans for the years 1991 through 2002:

Realize that Chinese journalism standards are somewhat different from American journalism standards. There's no source for the information, so it's impossible to know where it comes from. Some of the information in the story appears to originate from the head of CCAI, an American adoption agency! Nevertheless, the piece ran, uncensored, in a Chinese (state-owned) newspaper, so I have to assume it didn't offend anybody in the government too, too much.
Now, as for numbers: Let's assume that Americans still account for approximately 85 to 90% of all Chinese being adopted. Let's also note the sharp increase in the number of U.S. adoptions from 2002 to 2005 alone: from 5,000 in '02 to nearly 8,000 in '05. Assuming linear growth, that would be about 9,000 in '06. Add on another 10% or so, and you get 10,000 dossiers that CCAA has to process this year. That's about 830 or so each month. A lot of work, any way you look at it.
OK. Now. Add on the fact that you expect to see a sharp jump in the number of dossiers from approximately February '05 through July/August '05 due to the clamp-down in Russia (see my comments on an earlier thread), and that increases the number of dossiers being logged in on a temporary basis.
Next: throw in the Hague convention. Under the Hague, China had to formalize its domestic adoption program, and the Ministry of Civil Affairs assigned it to -- guess who? -- our friends at CCAA. So they've been busy establishing and implementing this program.
Next: Check out the CCAA website. Apparently, they're also instituting training and development sessions for existing SWI workers. Not an objectionable idea, I would say, but another task CCAA has set upon itself.
Finally, again at the CCAA website. There are now 16 other countries (two have been added since my last count!) engaged in international adoption with China. More work for them.
So, much as I am loathe to believe the rumor from Sweden, I'm sorry to say I find it plausible. Lucky you -- you were logged in in September. Those of us logged in just a few months later may really suffer the wait....

BTW, I'm not being anonymous because I'm afraid to be identified... I'm just too lazy to create a usename and password.

Our agency told us (in their magazine) that there were more than 20.000 files from adoptive parents send to China in 2005.
There are only 10.000 children "available" for foreign adoption each year.
How many children for which country didn't it say. Here in the Netherlands it is about a 500 children each year from China.
Today an spanish news paper published that last year 2005 in Spain were adopted from China 2699 children, being the second country in the world afetr USA in international adoptions.
